Cape
DEFINIZIONE
  • Garment made of cloth or other kind of wool and also silk that is placed on the shoulders and reaches the knees. Loose, sleeveless and round or semicircular. It serves to cover or shelter, so it is put as an outer piece, over the rest of the clothing. Some capes have a neck or piece made of the same fabric on the top, that functions as ornament as well as subjection. These pieces are called chapels, they fall behind and girdle the shoulders. They close in front with ties, cords, etc. They can vary in their length, that is, they can cover only the back or protect the entire body. The cape replaced the wide-sleeved coat with a hat that would become the garment of the peasants of the fifteenth century.
