- n. A term borrowed from the Latin "acanthus". A conventionalized representation of the spiny decorative leaf of Acanthus spinosus, a Mediterranean plant, used in architecture in the decoration of Corinthian and Composite capitals, and also in cabinetry, embroidery, and other arts and crafts.
