DEFINITION
  • A French term that describes the 19th-century European artists' interest in Japanese art, culture, and aesthetics. The influence of Japan can be seen in much French art of the later 19th century, such as the asymmetrical compositions of Edgar Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec, and the flat patterns and pure colours of Paul Gauguin.
