DEFINITION
  • n. From the French "chiffe". A tabby (plain-weave), lightweight, diaphanous fabric, made with hard-twisted yarn. Originally was silk yarn, but nowadays is made up from nylon or other synthetic fibres. It is dyed or printed and often used as "drpae over silk rayon". Sometimes this term has a sense of "light in weight".
