DEFINITION
- n. From the Old English "fann" "fon" "fonnæ" and the Middle English "fanne" "phan" "vanne" and the Latin "vannus". It refers to an instrument hold by hand or agitating the air, to cool the face, etc. with an artificial breeze. It is constructed so as to admit of being folded up in small compass, its form when unfolded being that of a sector of a circle.
