- n. From the Old English "þistil". The common name of the prickly herbaceous plants of the genus Carduus and several closely allied genera, having the stems, leaves, and involucres thickly armed with prickles, the flower-heads usually globular, and the flowers most commonly purple; many species are abundant as weeds.
