DEFINITION
- n. A term inherited from Germanic. From the Old English "hread" "hriod" and Middle English "hreod" "reod" "reddle" "reyd" among other forms. It is a part of the loom, a device in the shape of a comb, which consists of a set of evenly spaced wires known as dents, fastened in the batten between two parallel bars of wood and metal. It is used for separating or determining the spacing between the warp ends and for beating the weft into place. It is now, generally, of thin metal strips, called leaves.
