DEFINITION
  • A term used, mainly in France, to refer to a style in the arts and decoration that covers the period of the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715) that begins, mainly, in the 1660s. The major features of this style are the sumptuous materials, exquisite craftsmanship, a profusion of classical motifs, and strict formality of organization. Textiles are featured by the naturalistic motifs, big proportions, architectonic or archaeological ruins appear sometimes.
