Gregoire velvet
DEFINITION
- It refers to a decorated velvet, by a mixed painting and stamping procedure devised by Grégoire, born in Aix-en-Provence, in 1751 who lived in Paris and died in 1846; He never revealed the secret of his delicate manipulations. It seems that this velvet was manufactured by previously painting the pile warp. Naturally, the drawing that was to be depicted in it was lengthened in the necessary proportion so that, once woven, this warp that constituted the pile of the fabric was left to the convenient proportion. The secret was not only in this process, but also in the colours used, of an unequaled sweetness and brightness.
