PREFERRED TERM
Piñuela
DEFINITION
  • A term in Spanish referring to a silk fabric. It is called in that way because the etimology in Spanish between "piñuela" and "piña" is related, meaning pineapple. In the Ordinances for the production of silk fabrics of the General Board of Trade (1684, Ecija) this fabric is also mentioned. It was a tabby to which a pile warp was added, made in the same way as in the case of plush or velvet but keeping the tabby as background. It also designated a fabric of different colours - black, silver or blue - which was used in the manufacture of clothing such as basquiñas, bodies, shawls, breeches, jackets, habits and also served to make accessories such as petrines.
